On February 28, 2005, Renault Trucks, Irisbus France, IFP, the National Transport & Transport Security Research Institute (INRETS), the Greater Lyon area & Lyon Chamber of Commerce (CCI) filed an application to become a center of excellence in the field of systems for the transportation of persons & goods in urban environments, in accordance with the requirements of the French law on Finance for 2005, n° 2004-1484 of 30/12/2005 and the corresponding texts of application. 
 
This application was selected by the CIADT on July 12 and the Competitiveness Cluster label was granted to Lyon Urban Truck&Bus 2015.
 
The partners in the Competitiveness Cluster – industrial companies, scientific laboratories, users and institutions – decided to join together in the Lyon Urban Truck&Bus 2015 association, which is responsible for the governance of the center and its initiatives with the State and other financial sponsors.
 
Founded in June 2006, the LUTB Association now brings together the R&D Cluster and the Rhône-Alpes Automotive Cluster.
